Echoes of Romance: A Celebration of Forgotten Voices

Join us for a concert dedicated to the underrepresented yet profoundly beautiful music of Florence Price.

This program opens with the lively and charming Overture to Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss Jr., setting a festive tone for the evening. Next, we delve into the dreamy world of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s sensual and romantic poem.

The first half concludes with Tchaikovsky's iconic Fantasy Overture to Romeo & Juliet, a piece that captures the tragic love story with its lush melodies and dramatic orchestration. The highlight of the evening is Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 in E minor, a work that blends the rich traditions of Black American music with the classical symphonic form. Price’s music has long been overlooked due to her identity, but her compositions are filled with romanticism and soul. This concert is a tribute to her legacy and a celebration of voices that deserve to be heard.
