Unknown Duets: duos for viola and double bass focuses on chamber literature for two instruments that have historically been left out of repertoire.

Kate and Emery will offer an introduction to these less familiar but vitally important instruments and walk the listener backwards through the timeline of the literature. The program will start with a 21st century duo whose first movement is inspired by the pastoral English countryside and whose second movement is an energetic, jazzy theme and variations. We’ll then step back in time to a suite of Ukrainian/Polish folk tunes romanticized at the turn of the 20th century, each movement of which has a style independent enough to stand alone. Ultimately, we’ll arrive back to the viola and bass virtuosi at the peak of the Classical Period (with a Rondo on a surprisingly familiar tune).

Tom Knific: Duo for Viola and Double Bass
Reinhold Glière: Suite for Viola & Double Bass
Johannes Mathias Sperger: Duetto for Double Bass & Viola
